It is known that fuel,lease,salary of crew etc., price is always going to increase,therefore there should be some extra earnings apart from upcoming ads, ground services etc. There should be sponserships and more extra earning elements.
Love boeing planes, especially 747's and 777's

Should it earn more or less than advertising? I would like ads to have a direct affect on improving airlines first though.

Sponsorships are clearly a form of advertising, therefore there could be a heading under the marketing tab for sponsorships. I don't think it would be as effective as TV or newspaper advertising, but it would still have some kind of positive impact for the airline (also, as mentioned, it's certainly not considered an earning element).

Another way that many airlines bring in secondary revenue streams is to operate their own travel agencies. I think it would tough to implement in the game, but it's an idea...

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned with alternative revenue streams, as you will find that after the first few game months, it's pretty easy to bring in a decent profit even when spending big on IFE, IFS, & advertising...
