At the start of the 70's US carriers were coming out with lavishly modern designs, and Aeroazteca felt very inadequate in comparison. There was a problem though. Designers couldn't figure out a clear way forward. The airline decided to make a simplistic livery as an intermediate stopgap while a newer and more lasting design had time to mature.
