2023 East Asia Design Challenge | Formosa Aerial System for Transport (FAST)

Welcome to the AE’s 2023 East Asia Design Challenge!

Happy summer everyone! I’m excited to be hosting this year’s East Asian Design Challenge in it’s fourth year running! This year’s challenge will occur between July 15th to the August 15th, and the purpose of this event is to enable individuals to expand and explore their understanding of East Asian culture and present their research in a creative forum. In a nod to last year’s event, the 2023 East Asia Design Challenge is sponsored by the Formosa Aerial System for Transport (FAST), a regional carrier designed by Makka and based in Taipei, Taiwan.

This year’s theme captures a moment during the 80’s in Taiwanese pop-culture and design. Taipei Dreamin’ draws inspiration from popular Taiwanese album covers, cartoons, and storefront signs during the time that East Asia, and the region more broadly, experienced rapid growth. Teresa Teng? Boba? Neon lights, and cassette tapes? These icons were part of the dawn of a new age which brought forth hopes, dreams, and excitement. And in the same spirit, I hope this event helps kick off your adventures, too!
