Westair began operations in 1991 as a low cost alternative to Californian and Sierra Pacific for interstate travel within California as well as low cost options to holiday destinations in Mexico and Central America. The airline began operations out of SNA with a fleet of Avro RJ 100s, 737-300s and a single 757 used for the Latin American routes. The airline found a comfortable niche, successfully staying out of the way of the more premier carriers and found room to expand into the southwestern airline vacuum left by Sonoran West that was not adequately filled by Sierra Pacific.
