Daiichi Nippon Airlines

Daiichi Nippon Airlines (第一日本航空) (DJ/DNA) also known as DNA or 第一空, is a Japanese private regional airline with its main headquarters located at Fukuoka Airport, where its main hub is also located. The airline also operates large hubs in Osaka (Kansai), Nagoya and Naha with strong focuses on Itami, Haneda and Hiroshima. The airline operates a 65-strong all-jet fleet consisting of Airbus A320ceos, A320neos, A321neos and Boeing 787-8s, with an average fleet age of just 6.7, making it by far one of the youngest fleets in Japan.

DNA was founded in 1965 in Fukuoka as West Japan Airlines (西日航）as which it was known until its takeover by Fukuoka-based Dai-Ichi World Systems following nearly a decade of financial woes in the 1990s, largely due to its ageing equipment and company culture making it unable to adequately compete with the likes of Japan National and Nippon Airlines in a period of economic stagnation. At that point, the airline operated a tired fleet of 727s, classic 737s and 747s that were quickly replaced by Airbus A320 aircraft following a ¥130bn order as part of Daiichi's initial investment into the ailing carrier.

In 2003, West Japan Airlines was rebranded into Daiichi Nippon Airlines and the DNA of JAPAN brand was adopted in 2009. The airline took delivery of the first 787 in Japan in 2011 and commissioned a livery inspired by leaves flowing in the wind to convey the airline's focus on sustainability and eco-friendliness, depicted above.
