With the leisure market growth in demand for more flights from Finland and demand for tourism during the Christmas season to northern Finland's tourist destination of Lapland from Europe, Suomi Airlines would purchase 4 Boeing 737-800 type aircraft with deliveries starting in November 1998. The 737 would operate to destinations across Europe from Suomi's smaller hubs across Finland, freeing up the 757 fleets to operate and open new routes from Suomi's main hub in Helsinki.

During the winter season, the Boeing 737's would operate flights from Kittilä, Ivalo, and Rovaniemi to destinations in Germany, France, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, bringing tourists to Northern Finland's main Christmas attraction in Lapland "Santa's Village" the home of Santa Clause. These flights would be operated for Suomi's own tour operator Finnlomat, but also on behalf of several other European tour operators from November through to January. Until the start of the peak travel season again, Suomi Airlines would wet lease and operate charter services for various companies and airlines around the world.

Love the idea that some of these could end up doing wet lease in the Caribbean in the summer

    very nice

    Thanks!

Impeccable... but a question in 1993, did the 737-800 already exist?

    no

The 737 didn’t get introduced until 1998, it’s just in the 1993 era livery.
