Suomi Airlines was founded in 1993 as part of the newly formed Suomi Leisure Group, setup to meet the growing demand for leisure destinations in Europe and North Africa. Taking delivery of the first of eight Boeing 757-200's in April of that year, launching their first service from Helsinki Vantaa International Airport to Palma, Mallorca. Following routes would open up to other leisure destinations across the Mediterranean, Greece and Canary Islands throughout 1993.

With these leisure routes being primarily seasonal Suomi Airlines needed a way to continue to support itself during the off-peak seasons, with a shift in focus to warmer destinations came the introduction of the Boeing 767 to operate long haul flights to Asia and the Caribbean, followed with Christmas flights to New York, as well as operating Christmas charter flights to Lapland from Germany, France, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Excess aircraft in the airline's fleet would see Suomi form a partnership with Canadian airline, SkyTours, sending aircraft to Canada for the peak travel season in winter.
