1991 | A Global Airline | McDonnell Douglas MD-11

In the 1990s, as the new millennium approached, Colombiana's management recognized the need to modernize the airline's fleet with aircraft that would enable greater efficiency and capacity. In particular, there was a need for a long-range aircraft to enable expansion on Colombiana's European routes. After much consideration, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 was chosen for this role. Unfortunately, the type turned out to have less range and efficiency than expected but since the company had already invested so much in training crews for the jet it was decided to keep the aircraft for the foreseeable future while waiting for a suitable replacement.

Despite its problems, the MD-11 enabled Colombiana to significantly increase capacity on its routes to Spain and Western Europe. The type remained with the airline well into the 21st century before it was replaced with more efficient Airbus widebody jets on intercontinental routes. Additionally, the MD-11 was the first type in Colombiana's fleet to wear the livery introduced in 1995.

    Ooh I like this one!

Thanks! Glad you like it :D

Interesting decision to remove the red.

Regardless, great job on all these liveries! I think this one is my favourite.

Thanks! Yes, I wanted to change it a bit because the three Colombian flag colors seem a bit overused for Colombian airline designs :D
