1960 | The Jet Age Begins | Boeing 707-120B

Colombiana entered the jet age in the early 1960s with the introduction of both the pure jet Boeing 707 and the jet-prop Fairchild F-27 (an American development of Fokker's popular F27 airliner). The company was looking to solidify its position in the domestic market due to increasing competition from other Colombian carriers that had sprung up rapidly during the postwar era. Unfortunately, during this same period, low-intensity conflict increased in Colombia between the government and extreme left guerilla groups. The addition of other extremist groups and growing crime syndicates due to the drug trade caused growing security concerns for the airline. Despite the challenges, Colombiana continued to grow and expanded its international network while also introducing smaller regional aircraft to serve the rural territories of Colombia which were largely unconnected to the rest of the country.

Later, in the mid 1960s, the introduction of the 727 enabled Colombiana to start providing jet service on all major domestic routes and shift the 707s primarily to international services. Additionally, with the introduction of the new jet-powered aircraft, a simple more streamlined livery was unveiled which varied slightly based on the aircraft type to which it was applied. However it retained Colombiana's classic yellow-gold color that helped set it apart amongst the increasing number of airlines serving the country.
