Nordic - Air Finland | 1990s | McDonnell Douglas MD-11(ER)

Nordic became the launch customer of the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, receiving the first of ten examples to be delivered in the fourth quarter of 1990. Acquisition of the MD-11 enabled Nordic to bolster their efforts to increase service to East Asia, while committing to their goal of rejuvenating their fleet by the onset of the new millennium. Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo and Singapore were the cities the MD-11 served in Asia, while Los Angeles, Miami and New York-JFK were the cities it served in the West, with the latter two being complimented by services on the Boeing 767-300ER.

The MD-11, upgraded to "ER" or Extended Range specifications in the very early 2000s, effectively the airline's flagship airliner. The jet would enjoy this lofty title until 2005, with the introduction of the Airbus A340-300 dethroning it. The airline's final MD-11 flew its final flight in 2010 as a charter service for Spanish football players playing in Los Angeles, while cargo-converted Nordic Cargo MD-11s would fly their final flights for Nordic Cargo in 2014, being sold to a prominent American cargo airline shortly after.
