AeroCalifornia - The Fleet - 1980s

Starting out as a small intrastate airline by the 1980s had grown to one of the largest regional carriers based on the west coast, AeroCalifornia found success with its cheerful and fun atmosphere and low fares.

By the 80s the fleet included the soon to leave Boeing 727 along with a raft of DC-9s and MD-80s with Fokker F27s on regional routes to Catalina Island and up to Lake Tahoe due to an inability to use jets and the F28 based out of Palm Springs and San Jose.

The brand new BAe 146 arrived to operate higher frequencies at the noise sensitive Orange County Airport flying to the airline's base at San Diego and onto San Francisco, San Jose, Palm Springs and Sacramento.

Its position as the West Coast's dominant airline was secured in 1993 when it acquired and merged with deadly rival TransCal which at the time was under threat of hostile takeover.
