All Japan Airways Original Rising Crane Route (1970s)

Due to a significant population of Japanese Brazilians living in Brazil, All Japan Airways was quite interested in opening a direct route between their hub in Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s. The airline originally wanted to fly to Sao Paulo due to a larger Japanese Brazilian population there, but the lack of a suitable airport for long-range jets made them choose Rio de Janeiro instead. The original route was flown by a DC-8-62 and involved three stops in Anchorage, Winnipeg, and Caracas. The route was switched to Tokyo Narita to Rio de Janeiro Galeao via Toronto Pearson when the 747SP first started flying for AJA and when Tokyo Narita airport opened in 1978, and the destination airport in Brazil was changed to Sao Paulo (GRU) once it opened in 1985. All Japan Airways continued to fly the route up until the end of 2019 with the 777-200LR and the 787-9 with the YYZ-GRU section of the route operating as a code share with Canadian and Brazilian alliance members, but it is currently temporary suspended. It is yet to be known when the airline would resume this service.

(Thought about trying something new here. Let me know about your opinions in the comments below.)

tbh this is more realistic for a 1970s-2000s thing bc alliance connections would replace this by then

Well the idea for this route was inspired off of Qantas and British Airways' direct route between London and Sydney via Singapore even though they are in the same alliance.

London to Sydney garners more than enough demand to make a LHR-SIN-SYD route feasible, however HND to GIG would be far from profitable with 3 stops. As Makka said, alliances would quickly replace this post-2000.

also it would most likely be HND-LAX-GIG or something with a MD11 until the 2000s
