In 1990, Wright introduced the MD-87 in order to start replacing some older DC-9s and operate routes which required the range and performance of the MD-80 series but not the capacity of the MD-81. This also coincided with a slightly modified livery, introducing a new version of the "W" logo but retaining the cheatline and billboard titles. Unfortunately, the MD-87 proved to have higher operating costs than the DC-9s and its expected role serving longer routes that were too 'thin' for the larger MD-80s did not pan out as expected, so the airline decided not to fully retire the older DC-9s.
Ship 873 (N873WR) was delivered to Wright in 1992 and was replaced by the Boeing 717 in 2001. It was fitted with 12 First and 98 Coach seats and offered Airfone service in each row.
