Flight 878 - Collison Course

Flight 878 - Collison Course

On September 29, 2006, Asas Flight 878 was making its way from Manaus to Rio de Janeiro. It was operated by a Boeing 737-800 and was loaded with 148 passengers and 6 crew. It is almost five o'clock and the aircraft is making it's way over the Amazon Rainforest.

10 miles away, a BAE 125, N850JA, was also making it's way over the forest. It was carrying two pilots and five passengers. This flight was operated by the American oil company Anodyne and was carrying executives to Texas from Argentina. Air traffic control had instructed both N850JA and Flight 878 on the same airway in opposite directions.

At 4:56 BRT, Flight 878 and N850JA spotted each other. To the horror of the pilots, they were at the same altitude and rapidly speeding towards each other head on. N850JA quickly pitched down to avoid the aircraft to no avail. At 4:56:54 BRT, both aircraft collided. The vertical stabilizer of N850JA clipped the right wing of Flight 878. The 737 began to spiral violently towards the ground. The pilots attempted to fix the issue, unaware of the true damage. At 1,500 feet, The 737 broke up due to the tremendous forces exerted on it and it impacted the ground in pieces. N850JA, with the loss of it's vertical stabilizer, dove towards the ground and impacted the rainforest 5 miles away from the 737's crash site. Neither passengers from both aircraft survived.

It was later determined that air traffic control had made an error arranging both aircraft on the same airway, creating a collision course. However, it also came out that N850JA's collision avoidance system wasn't working at the time of the crash. The pilots, for unknown reasons, made no attempts to fix the issue and continued the flight.

The accident resulted in a meltdown of Brazil's aviation sector which lasted from 2007 to 2008. Asas suffered losses in G4 of 2006 and a drop in passenger numbers which it would recover from in 2009. A memorial was created in Peixoto de Azevedo, 20 miles from the crash site, and it memorialized the 161 lives that were lost over the rainforest that fateful day.
