The first Air Malaysia Boeing 747 arrived in Kuala Lumpur in late 1971 to incredible fanfare. Much of Kuala Lumpur stopped to rush to Subang to witness the arrival of the behemoth, wearing the blue and red Air Malaysia livery for the first time. A further four 747-100s would continue to serve with the airline over the next two decades. The aircraft was inaugurated on a flight to Don Mueang, complementing other brand new jet aircraft on the route.
Much criticism surrounded the arrival of the jumbo in Malaysia, with many people believing that the then-state run airline had needlessly spent taxpayers' money on a "white elephant" PR project for the airline.
