Halifax Overseas Shuttle

AIRFRAME - McDonnell Douglas MD-81

REGISTRATION - C-GNJO

BASE - Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport [YUL]

With constant and rapid growth, came the need for expansion. In 1980, McDonnell Douglas received FAA certification for its upcoming MD-81. This aircraft, sold as the successor to the DC-9 family immediately caught McKeen's eye. The company at the time operated a trio of DC-9-30, DC-9-40, and DC-9-50 aircraft within the fleet. Launching services to the Caribbean on seasonal services out of YUL, the allocated DC-9-30s were flown constantly to fill demand. The MD-81 was a perfect substitution to fly to the Caribbean and out west toward Vancouver & Seattle.

The airline leased a variety of new aircraft in 1981. Expanding both its DC-9 and MD-81 fleet, along with expanding DHC-7 operations. Operations out of YUL grew, while at the same time YOW turned into a focus city. Halifax Overseas Shuttle became known across Nova Scotia & Quebec for seasonal travel to the Caribbean. Various destinations included Kingston, Punta Cana, St. Maarten, Grenada, and Port of Spain.
