Yangtze Airlines operated a fleet 10 Embraer E145 regional jets, which were stationed in the Guangzhou hub for regional and short haul flights, complementing the hub's 737 fleet. Talks about replacing these aging jets started in the late 2000s, and eventually, the COMAC ARJ21 was selected as their replacement. However, after numerous delays, the airline retired its E145 fleet in 2014, before the ARJs can be delivered. To fill the gap in the fleet, the airline leased a fleet of 5 Embraer 175 regional jets, which was met with extremely high customer satisfaction. The airline decided to add 5 further orders of the type and keep the jet in their fleet as the permanently replacement of the E145. The orders for the ARJ would finally be filled in 2020, and the airline would instead place these jets in the Chengdu hub to operate short haul flights in southwest China.
