Fleet and route expansion in the 2000s

Fleet and route expansion in the 2000s

Between 2001 and 2005, the acquisition of new Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft (-700 and -800 variants) enabled Baltija to expand its European route network in addition to increasing frequencies on the busiest routes. With the launch of a redesigned website featuring a new online check-in system in 2007, Baltija unveiled a revamped livery on one of its Boeing 737-800s (LY-ARA) designed in collaboration with San Francisco-based branding agency Prophet. 2008 saw the addition of two Boeing 757-200s and a third Boeing 767-300ER (all leased from ILFC) to the fleet, with the latter replacing the first 767 leased from 1998 (the second one leased from 2000 would be replaced by a newer airframe from the same lessor in April 2010). In March that year, it was announced that Baltija would continue to grow its fleet to become the largest carrier serving the Baltic region within the next three to four years, aiming to expand to over 60 aircraft with orders for additional Boeing 737-800s as well as the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and Bombardier Q400.
