As the NZNAC 737s became commonplace in New Zealand skies in the early half of the 1970s, the airline looked into replacing their Vickers Viscount fleet with regional jets. Potential contenders included the Fokker F-28 Fellowship, the Yakovlev Yak-40 and the Hawker Siddeley HS.146 (aka the BAe 146). However, the plan was shelved due to the economic situation cutting down NZNACs finances, eventually opting to buy more Fokker F-27s instead.
Special thanks to Boomeruesky for the Yak-40 template.
Wow did they actually consider the Yak-40? That would have been quite a sight to see...
Nevertheless, this is still wonderful work, as always!

The Boeing 737 had settled into routine service when NAC launched a small regional jet study to replace the Viscount. This included the Russian Yakolev Yak 40, Fokker F28 'Fellowship' and the still-experimental Hawker Siddeley HS146. Unfortunately, the country fell into an economic slump caused by the 1973 oil crisis and the United Kingdom joining the EEC causing a drop in passenger numbers with NAC selling one of its brand new 737s after only six months in service. NAC quietly dropped the regional jet proposal and more F27-500s were purchased.

Yeah, I know. Couldn't find any other sources online to corroborate, and unfortunately lockdown's preventing me from looking at any printed material. Have to wait another week.
