2-2 | Sierra Pacific | Fokker F28-1000 | 1974-1993

Following the deregulation of the American airline market in 1978, Sierra Pacific would begin to see great competition start to sprout within the regional markets of the Western coast. With the relaxation of the Civil Aeronautics Board’s ability to set ticket prices along with newfound competition, Sierra Pacific would have to work harder to maintain their majority share in regional routes. The Fokker F28 would become essential in this pursuit. Originally ordered by the airline in 1973 in order to replace prop aircraft such as the Electra and HS748, the F28 would slowly replace these aircraft leading up to deregulation. Afterwards, the type would become ever more important to the airline. The F28 would commonly fly frequent hops from Sierra Pacific’s bases along the west coast to smaller cities. The F28 would serve the airline into the late ‘90s, with the last F28 being retired in early spring 1998 in accordance with the end of the busy winter season, being replaced by newer deliveries of Avro RJ units.
