In 2003 the first A340-600 of Air Portugal touched down at Lisbon Portela Airport. It would be the first of 4. They would become the mainstay for Air Portugal's busy Brazilian routes, but because of the financial crisis in 2008 they were put aside for the more favourable A330-300. The A340-300 soldiered on though. They were a matter of controversy since a lot of higher ups did not think the purchase was nescessary. Most probably a bribe was accepted from Rolls Royce. The court case was never settled and is currently still ongoing, probably going to be dismissed for old age.
In 2009, after the financial crisis had settled down, Air Thailand bought the 4 examples to complement 6 of their own and flew them over to Bangkok after being repainted in their livery.
