Beginning in 1991, Air Tunisie abandoned the domestic market to shift its focus to international operations, with all intra-Tunisian routes being taken over by regional airline Tuninter (which was later rebranded as SevenAir).

In 1995 Air Tunisie became a publicly traded company for the first time in its history and registered in the Tunis Stock Exchange with 20% of its stock being floated. Ahmed Smaoui took over as president and director general of the company in March 1997, and in January 1999 he was succeeded by Abdelmalek Larifthe.

The 1990s also marked the start of the Airbus era for the airline, receiving its first A320 aircraft on 4 July 1991. Six more A320s would be delivered from December 1992 through June 2002. Two shorter A319 aircraft were delivered in August and September 1998 wearing an interim white livery.

On 28 August 1999, Air Tunisie received its first Airbus A330-200 in the new livery with the revised Tunisian star and crescent introduced on the national flag in July that year. The rest of the owned fleet, except for the soon-to-be-retired Boeing 727s, would be repainted in this livery over the next several months.

By April 2000 Air Tunisie's fleet has grown to 29 aircraft, consisting of one Airbus A300B4-200, two Airbus A319-100s, ten Airbus A320-200s, two Airbus A330-200s, four Boeing 727-200s, three Boeing 737-200s, four Boeing 737-500s, and three Boeing 737-600s. New destinations introduced in the 1990s included Athens, Barcelona, Beirut, Berlin, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Bratislava, Budapest, Copenhagen, Damascus, Düsseldorf, Graz, Hamburg, Lille, Linz, Lisbon, Lyon, Malta, Milan, Munich, Palermo, Prague, Salzburg, Stockholm, Strasbourg, Tabarka, Toulouse, Vienna, and Warsaw.
