Originally meant to be delivered to Dhahrani in 2020 but delayed due to testing and certification issues, the 777-9 will now enter the fleet in 2021. While there have been questions about whether these deliveries should be deferred further due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the airline's position up to now has been that no such action will be taken. The 777-9 will feature the same improved hard products in First, Business, and Economy as have been introduced on the 787-10 earlier this year, and the type will supplement (and eventually replace) the 777-300ER.

The fictional Kingdom of Dhahran is located near the real Saudi Arabian city called Dhahran, but has no affiliation with it, and the name is a coincidence.
