Early 2000s: First expansion

Early 2000s: First expansion

In 1996 Air Hanoi ordered 30 Airbus A320 series and four Boeing 767-300ER aircraft scheduled for delivery between 2001 and 2003. This fleet expansion enabled the airline to further widen its network coverage, launching new routes to Australia, Japan, mainland China, Russia, and the rest of Southeast Asia.

At this point, Air Hanoi has grown to become Vietnam's second-largest airline as well as a close rival to national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines. The route network covered ten domestic destinations and the following international destinations: Bangkok, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Osaka, Paris (Charles de Gaulle), Phnom Penh, Seoul, Shanghai, Singapore, Taipei, Tokyo, Vientiane, and Yangon. As the Vietnamese aviation market continued to grow, so did the need for more aircraft to keep up with increases in passenger demand. To mitigate this, Air Hanoi ordered an additional four A320s and six A321s from Airbus in 2005, with scheduled deliveries planned for 2010.
