In 1983, Royal Airways began taking deliveries of BAe146-100 and -200 aircraft, ordered as part of an effort to replace the aging regional jet fleet comprised of BAC 1-11s and supplement turboprop service carried out by the relatively new Fokker F27s. The year later, another classic 80s-era narrowbody jet - the 737-300 - also began to be delivered, supplementing the 737-200s that had entered the fleet four years earlier, and working to replace the main bulk of Hawker Siddeley Tridents operating as the mainline workhorse in Royal Airways' fleet, which at that point were massively obsolete. These 737s quickly became a commonplace sight in many European airports.
