Late 2000s-early 2010s: Partial privatisation

After a period of continuous growth, things suddenly took a turn for Aviaperú in the late 2000s. Amid weakened global demand for international travel and a slowing Peruvian economy due to the Great Recession, the airline was forced to reduce frequencies on several long-haul services, including the lucrative Madrid and US routes. Compounding the effects of the recession were the rising operating expenses of the gas-guzzling MD-11s which have already fallen out of favor with other airlines as they sought to save money on fuel through fleet rationalisation. Citing their declining profitability and reduced competitiveness, Aviaperú retired its four MD-11s in 2009, operating their final flights from Los Angeles, New York, Madrid, and Miami to Lima on 28 February that year.

In 2010 Aviaperú once again revamped its livery, replacing the red-top scheme of the 1990s and 2000s with a more contemporary eurowhite scheme. The first aircraft to wear the new livery was N117PL, a Boeing 767-300ER christened Huascarán.

Plans for the partial privatisation of Aviaperú were also underway this time around when the Peruvian government announced the sale of up to 49 percent of the airline to private investors. Several local and foreign buyers expressed interest in purchasing shares, including Brazil's Synergy Group, Peruvian billionaire Carlos Rodriguez-Pastor, and longtime US partner Delta Air Lines to name a few. The bidding process would be completed in 2011, with Delta emerging as the highest bidder and acquiring an initial 25 percent stake in Aviaperú. Delta's stake would increase to 37 percent and then to 49 percent in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
