Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200ER

After Continental's second stint with bankruptcy under Frank Lorenzo, the airlines' outstanding orders for the Airbus A330 and Airbus A340 were annulled, and the order for 15 767-300ERs was rescinded for capital with the new CEO, Gordon Bethune, calling the shots. With the 767 out and no large aircraft on order to replace the 747-200 and DC-10-30. Boeing pitched the new 767-400ER (Along with the 752/753 and 762ER) combined with the 777-200ER to offer Continental a cheap fleet renewal and they took it. The new widebody fleet would be delivered between 1998 and 2010, completing Continentals' second and final widebody fleet renewal.

Continental's 777-200ERs were deployed from Houston and Newark to places abroad such as Tel Aviv, Delhi, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Lagos. Shanghai was the last route Continental would add in the fall of 2009 from Newark. These 777s would also service Micronesia from Tokyo.

N78001 is named for Gordon Bethune, Continental's CEO from 1994 to 2004, who turned the airline around under the Go Forward Plan.

N77006 is named for Robert F. Six, the man who purchased the airline from Walter Varney and changed its name to Continental. He would serve as CEO from 1934 to 1986 and would be a leading voice in aviation, specifically with deregulation of the US airline market. As of February 19nd, 2020, N77006 has entered paint in Victorville, CA, and it is uncertain whether the aircraft will continue to bear his name.

N77019 is named for Larry Kellner, who succeeded Gordon Bethune and oversaw a large expansion of the airline in the late 2000s.
