Compañía Peruviana de Aviación, S.A. was founded in 1980 via the merger of privately-owned AeroAndinas and government-owned SAPTA (Sociedad Anónima Peruana de Transportes Aéreos). This was made possible by the ending of the military government which had been in control during the 1970s. Unfortunately, the economic situation of Peru declined during the 1980s, and Peruviana struggled to remain operational. In the late 1990s the government stake in the airline was sold to private investors.

In 2010, a majority stake in the airline was sold to foreign investors (specifically Hans Group, Inc.) which was followed by significant improvements in the quality and operations of the airline as Hans Group intended to turn Peruviana into a world-class carrier to supplement other airlines in which it holds stakes. This stake was raised to 80% in 2016 and led to a refreshed branding of the airline and the launch of a fleet modernization program.
