The name "Finlonti" originates from the first known reference to Finland, which was found on Runestone U 582. The airline itself was first operational in 1942, flying Nazi-supplied Ju-52 aircraft for upper-level officials in the Continuation War. Because of a shortage of available pilots (any airworthy man was already dedicated to the Finnish Air Force), the wartime transport operations were run by a third party, the Finnish National Air Service (Suoman Kansallinen Lentoliikenne, S.K.L.). S.K.L. employed over one hundred female aviators to allow operations to proceed. After the Continuation War Ended, S.K.L continued its operations in the Lapland War and until the end of World War Two. After the war, S.K.L. directed its services away from government use and towards the private sector, offering sightseeing tours as well as air transport. As the war had been finished, upper management decided that the name no longer fit the airline's direction, and was hence renamed Finlonti, in an homage to the proud history of both Finland and the airline.
