In 1996, Austrian Airlines decided to upgrade its long-haul fleet of Airbus A310 aircraft with Boeing 767 and Boeing 777 aircraft, placing an order for 15 Boeing 767-300ER aircraft with 10 options, and 10 Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. In 1998, the airline changed its 10 options to 10 orders, and converted them to the Boeing 767-400ER, becoming the European launch customer for the type. The first Boeing 767-300ER arrived later that year in 1998, and the first Boeing 767-400ER arrived in 2000.
The aircraft operate flights to Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America from Austrian's base in Vienna. Seasonally, the aircraft also operate ski charters from Innsbruck and Salzburg.
In 2019, the Austrian-Hanseatic Group placed an order for Airbus A350s, Boeing 777s and Boeing 787s to replace their aging long-haul fleets. As of July 2019, Austrian will be receiving a mix of Boeing 777-300ERs and Boeing 787s to replace their current fleet.
OE-ARB, OE-ARX featured in the airline's 1990s and early 2000s livery.
