Convair CV 440

Convair CV 440

Before it was known as BahamAir, the airline existed as the Royal Bahamian Mail Service. This service was used to deliver cargo and mail to different islands in the Bahamas chain; something that continues to this day. When passenger service was introduced in 1958, seats were added to the Convair fleet, and the airline became the Royal Bahamian Air Service. The window plugs were removed, and the aircraft were fully functional as passenger aircraft. Amid all the rebranding, BahamAir's Convair fleet was re-engined with Allison 501 turboprops in 1968 and transformed into Convair 580s. These continued in a passenger role until 1977 when they were taken out of service and returned to their cargo configuration.

These aircraft were modified again in 1996, when they were flown to Hamilton, Ontario and converted into Convair 5800s. Two of them were sold, but one returned to the Bahamas where it continues to haul cargo across the Bahamas, and to other destinations in South Florida, Central America, and the Caribbean.
