American Polynesian Airlines | DC-8-63

American Polynesian Airlines | DC-8-63

''American Polynesian Airlines'', or short ''APA'', was originally founded in 1946 as ''Hawaiian Air Service''. Hawaiian Air Service was a very tiny airline in comparison to other big airlines of the time. At first the little airline flew round trips to all Hawaiian Islands with DC-4s. At that point of time the airline didn't touch the mainland of the USA at all. The airline didn't grow that much in the 50s despite making good profit but with the introduction of the DC-7 Hawaiian Air Service managed to leap on to the mainland. So the airline started fresh routes along the beautiful coastline of California.
At the end of the 50s things started kicking of finally. The airline rebranded itself into American Polynesian Airlines and gave itself newer fresher colours. Being a loyal Douglas customer APA took the opportunity and risk to order the new DC-8. Managing the balancing act of finances after the purchase the airline headed into a completely new market: long haul routes.

The DC-8-50s were the new face of the airline. Painted in beautiful warm colours and Kamehameha on the tail watching over the plane the airline flew into a new era of aviation. The cabin looked very tropical, the seats were embroidered with hawaiian flowers and patterns and the cabin crew wore clothing inspired by traditional hawaiian garments. Even the food on the plane was traditionally hawaiian, fish and fruits combined with sweet tropical beverages were served on every flight.
