Slovenian/Adriatic Boeing 717-200

As a long time user of the T-tail family of Douglas aircraft, Adriatic was interested in an order for 10 MD-95 aircraft and paid for them in advance in early 1991. Following the events that lead up to the break-up of Yugoslavia, Adriatic was left in a crisis because it lost the ability to operate from it's larger bases in Croatia, and was only left with it's LJU hub. Most of the DC-9-30's and some MD-80 family aircraft were sold or leased to other operators, while the MD-95 was still on order. During 1996, the airline rebranded as Slovenian. In 1998, one year after McDonnell Douglas was taken over, Boeing built the first 717-200 for Slovenian, which helped the airline reduce costs by retiring more MD-80's that were starting to become uneconomical. With the help of AEA, Slovenian was able to post an profit in 1999, after 9 years of constant losses. The 717's were operated until 2009, when they were replaced with Airbus aircraft.
