Can't open routes due to political reasons

When I want to open a route from Madrid to New York La Guardia the following message is displayed: "You have no flights on this route. You cannot fly this route due to political restrictions.". I've tried opening another route from Madrid to the US (Washington National) and the same message appears. What I don't understand is why are there these political restrictions, as I'm flying from Spain, not from Irak, Iran, or other countries in conflict. Why can't I open routes to the US?

According to WikipediaA perimeter rule prohibits nonstop flights to or from points beyond 1,500 statute miles (2,400 km) (except flights on Saturdays and flights to Denver)

Same thing is with Washington National. You conveniently picked two of the only large airports in the U.S. that have range restrictions. For New York, fly to JFK or EWR (Newark). For Washington, fly to IAD (Dulles) or BWI (Baltimore-Washington). Just about any other large airport in the U.S. will allow long range flights.
