Hey everyone! I've opened this topic to talk about the 797. What do you think it will be like? Will it be a re make of an older aircraft? Just tell us what you think!

I think that the 797 will be a remake of the 737, with all of the new technology on the 787 and engines like the 787. Here's what I think It will look like:

I see the 797 being a long way off now to be honest. The new short-haul airliner will just be a revamped 737, with probably new GTF engines. Let's face it, Boeing are not going to spend a lot of money, designed an entirely new aircraft, when their Airbus competition is just a slightly modified A320 (at least that's what Airbus are making it out to be anyway). Plus, the competition from Bombardier and Embraer is not exactly great; the Cseries I don't think will be a big seller, and even then, it isn't as big as the 737/A320, so it makes more sense, from an airline point of view, to continue with the 737/A320 to cover a larger range of missions, in order to keep the commonality.

So, with the new short haul airliner out of the question, with the 200-300 seater range covered by the 787, and the 300+ range covered by the 748i and the 774, I don't see the 797 coming for quite a while.

That said though, that is one cool looking plane... probably why I like the 787 so much!

i just did a report on boeing aircraft not to long ago, the Y1 project was going to be a new 737 make, i think the next 737 will be series 1000, and then they will look at doing the 797, but at eh moment, they cannot do anything to make the plane much more fuel efficient than the 737... until they can adapt 787 tecnology into a smaller form, the 797 is not feasible.

Hmm...With so many variants of aircraft and so much competition its hard to say what the 797 will be. I see a small short/medium haul ERJ-190 lookalike. But again the new C-series, ERJ, and Mitsubishi would be direct competition. It could pick up where the 737-600 didn't and replace a few older 737's. The problem with the newer 737's is they are all based on the same but aging design.

I think it may be like the A380. However, it would also make sense if it were to replace the 767. Guess we'll just have to wait and see! :D

They will without a doubt go for the larger end of the current 737/A320 series in terms of size. I am sure they, along with Airbus, concede the lower end to Bombardier and Embraer, as with all four, plus all the crappy new Chinese jets and the new Fokkers, the market will be too saturated. Either that, or there was talk of a tie up with Embraer, but I don't see that happening at all.

If I remember correctly, they're definitely making it a 737 replacement.

I think the 747 will be replaced by the Y3, Y2 is the 787, Y1 will be a 737 replacement, let's face it they've squeezed every bit of efficiency out of the 737 hull, they need a new design now, yeah AB is only just updating their 320, but Boeing already done that with the 737... twice. Time for a new model, I like the idea of a single aisle 787 like the 757 was a single aisle 767 :P maybe then it'd have the hot and high performance of the 757...

Over the last few week I have heard a lot about Boeing replacing the 737. This morning I read an article about Air France waiting to see boeing's response to the A320NEO. I am convinced it will be a replacement to the 737/ I would like to see something with a 757 design but my best guess is they'll base it of the 787. My question is what happens after they use the "797" title, 7107? 800?

Should they not try getting some 787's off of the order books first?

In the article I read Boeing said the 737 replacement would be out by 2020, so they have plenty of time haha.

Yeah I've read that the Y1 will be put into production along side the 738 and 739... I think 2020 is too long to wait for a replacement, Boeing should get the Y1 out by 2016/17 and blow the NEO out the water. Committing to the Y1 wouldn't justify a 737 re-engine for only 5-6 years... no much of sweat coating will find justification for that. I think Boeing will need to commit soon and show something brilliant to keep customers... 9-10 years is a LONG time to wait for a replacement.

But it gives them ALOT of time to observe it and make some improvements before releasing the real thing that will hopefully blow the A320s out ^___^
