The question is quite simple, but I can elaborate. I fail to see the point in opening a hub as it doubles the gate cost and has no apparent advantages (At least not that I know of). Are there reasons to open one that aren't listed in-game, or are hubs completely pointless?
Why should I open hubs?

Hubs allow you to get connecting passengers, which is a useful thing to help fill up seats on heavily competed routes and can easily break the game in very bad ways.
As-well, the doubling of the gate cost will not be a major hassle on your airline once it gets off the ground and you start opening Terminals, so I recommend opening them at the airports you use the most in terms of routes, destinations, and gates.

They give you connecting passengers (the ones shown in blue). They fill up planes and contribute to earnings and can generate a lot of revenue even with fierce competition.

If you're looking to boost your reputation by increasing frequency, a hub will fill up more planes because of those connecting passengers.

Yes, there is totally no way this can be exploited. Absolutely no way. It's not like people have done it before.

I do not have a hub yet, although I have connecting passengers... Do hubs just increase them?

Are you part of an alliance? If yes, then that is why. Alliances also bring connecting passengers.

I also have a question... in an old airline that I bankrupted mainly from this, I opened a hub and I wasn't getting any connecting passengers. What's going on? Was it that I had a 100% loadfactor anyway and it wouldn't change?

That was probably why. Green pax have priority over blue pax, so green pax will fill seats first.

you can’t possibly get many connecting passengers from just one route or a few small routes. You need to be a big airline in order to properly see the effect.I also have a question... in an old airline that I bankrupted mainly from this, I opened a hub and I wasn't getting any connecting passengers. Also have you seen the ultra big airlines in the sandbox worlds with every airport (even small ones) being a hub? They are just trying to make use of the feature, (totally not exploiting it)

The other benefit of opening a hub is it increases the maximum number of gates you're allowed to lease at that airport before you have to build a terminal - you're allowed to lease 10 at a non-hub airport; if you open a hub that increases to 25.

Leasing is stupid especially if you lease that much build a terminal plsThe other benefit of opening a hub is it increases the maximum number of gates you're allowed to lease at that airport before you have to build a terminal - you're allowed to lease 10 at a non-hub airport; if you open a hub that increases to 25.
