Range VS Max Range

What's the difference between range and max range?
I want to buy ERJ-145ERs but the range is too short for my routes, but the max range is more than enough.
Does max range mean least amount of pax onboard?
If so, i'll have to buy XRs but i don't want to if the max range works because it's way too much.
Thanks!

My experience has been thus:
Plane A
Seats 100 max persons
Standard range is 1000 miles
Max range is 1500 miles
You configure Plane A with 80 seats
You send Plane A on route of 1300 miles. System says "max payload is only 70 pax"
So you can send Plane A, but because you passed some threshold you will only earn 70 pax worth of revenue. I do not know how this is calculated--it is a black box functionality. I do not know what passengers get kicked off, F C or Y, etc.
So, to be safe, assume you will get a few more miles out of it than the Standard Range, but you will never get to Max Range--it will have so few people it becomes a flying gas can earning no $.

From what I have seen, if the range limits PAX to 70 that means 70Y pax. F and C PAX do not seem to have any affect on capacity at that range.
