The capitalist food system sucks.

Grow.

zgqCkFs.jpg

Harvest.

psz8gXM.jpg

Eat.

z5VFpLj.jpg

Save seeds and compost.

kyFzChs.jpg

Repeat.

aYxJLix.jpg

Since I use recycled materials, this process is totally for free. Because I compost, I don't need to buy fertilizer. And because I use mulch from dead leaves and twigs, the soil stays moist on hot, dry days, so no need for irrigation. And because I give the excess to my neighbors for free, they give me stuff I cannot grow in my yard.

Total cost: $0.00

Another benefit is that, while I do get some pests, it is not much of a problem and the plants will grow fine without toxic pesticides. This is because I don't plant single species of plant in huge monotonous rows. I plant different kinds of plants so pests have less chances of running over my garden. And because it is grown right where I eat it, I don't need to treat it with chemicals to prepare it for long distance transport. The ones you buy from groceries are loaded with chemicals. Grocery apples are the worst offender. They are toxic, and expensive, and are not fresh. So why spend so much money on something that is toxic when you can grow something clean and fresh for free.

Challenge:

Grow something you can use as food or even something medicinal. Update me about your progress.

Don't give me that excuse that you live in an apartment because I grow in pots and sometimes I grow on other people's lands.

I live in Australia. the only things I can grow will kill me.

Try growing moringa (English) or malunggay (Tagalog). These things are robust can can grow almost anywhere except where it snows. Works well in hot climates. If you live in Australia you probably know some Filipinos, and they probably have these in their backyard. You can grow them from seeds or cuttings.

Those are gorgeous! Are they an edible variety?

Game on! I'm waiting for my cherry tomatoes and malabar spinach to pop. May the best gardener win. We got off light, we live in some of the easiest climates to grow.

I'm also waiting for cherry tomatoes and chilli peppers. And true that, we can plant and forget, and they grow well anyway :P

Malabar spinach.

Cherry tomatoes

Notice the mulch made up of shredded palm tree leaves. They keep the soil moist all day so I don't need to water them and just rely on rain.

It's best to look at plants that are native to your place. I'm sure there are. :)

This is a neat thread. I'm personally not too good with gardening as I'm not overly consistent and sometimes forget I have things to take care of (I've even killed a cactus which was basically the last straw).

Papayas doing fine. I mulched it with shredded leaves so I don't have to water it ever. The soil stays moist even if it rains only once a week.

Some herbs. Oregano plus longevity spinach.

oTMzB5v.jpg

Some Soursop, Avocado and Pomelo seedlings I've started.

aUbYFT3.jpg

And, I made some improvised trellis made from cut up moringa branches when I pruned it, for my malabar spinach.
