If you haven't known already, a group in Miami Florida is working on bringing the Eastern Air Lines name and brand back. The new Eastern Air Lines is working with the FAA to get their commercial operating license in order to begin real commercial schedule service. Their home airport is Miami International airport.

The new Eastern was founded in 2011 and commenced operations as a charter airline on March 2015, and once the FAA has given them their commercial operating certification in early or mid 2016. They can transition to schedule service.

Eastern's starting strategy is to avoid compilation with airlines like American and jetblue as long as possible until they have enough aircraft and a good  marketing strategy.

EA received their first aircraft a Boeing 737-800 named "The spirit of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker" on December 19, 2014. They have orders for an additional 10 737-800s and options for 10 737 MAX 8s. They also ordered 20 of Mitsubishi's MRJ90 aircraft with purchasing rights for an additional 20 MRJ90s.

The president and CEO is Edward J. Wegel, if you want a good ceo for a start up airline it would be

Mr. Wegel. Mr. Wegel is a veteran of the airline and aerospace industry with almost 30 years of experience. Mr. Wegel served in the army as an army officer. He was the director of finance for the original Eastern Air Lines in NY and Director of operations for Pan Am from 1985 to 1987. (read more about Edward Wegel hear http://easternairlin...rd-j-wegel.html)

The other members in the board of directors also has background in the airline industry, so I'm confident that the new EA will be a success. If Eastern Air Lines CEO and management markets and runs the airline right, efficiency and makes a good profit they will become a

relevant name in the southern US, Caribbean and Latin America again and if they become really successful

replace US airways as the 4th major legacy US carrier, once the American Airlines US airways merger is complete.

So the big 4 us airlines will be American, United, Delta, and Eastern!

EA hasn't announced any destinations yet, but we can speculate where their first set of destinations will be. EA will be focusing on the Caribbean and Latin America so those destinations will more then likly be there.

They may offer destinations like The Bahamas, San Juan, St Maartin, Georgetown, and Cancun.

If EA expands to long haul routes they may order 787-/8/9, 777-200LR/300ER/LR, 777X, or A330.

In addition to Miami, Eastern could add hubs that once where hubs for the old Eastern

Charlotte Douglas, Kansas City, LaGuardia airport, and San Juan.

It will benefit the airline industry if Eastern Air Lines succeeds, remember compilation IS GOOD!

If he's as CEO of the original Eastern, the. We would be a little worried. The economic conditions today are a lot harder than then.

Well, I don't see it happening. Wegel is a liability , in charge of at least two bankrupt airlines. He was in the Army, which is also a liability.  If they expand to long haul routes, they will go bankrupt. Like dozens of other Airlines who made that big mistake.  It sounds like they are underfinanced.

He was director of finance of the original Eastern not the CEO.

I agree with you about long haul routes.
The Airlines that went bankrupt expanded to long haul routes too quickly, and they didn't have enough cash flow witch yes is a big mistake.
That's why I hope the management would wait until the new Eastern has enough short haul routes and established a decent cash flow to support long haul routes.
It may take 5 years or even 10 years before they can even think about their first long haul route let alone putting in money to order a planes like 777, 787 or a330.

Even if EA remains doing short to medium haul routs like MIA-SXM for a long time. I am just glad they are back.

I think instead of Europe, they should enter the Caribbean and south american market first. Also, they should change their airlines into LCC. Otherwise they wouldn't survived within the next 5 years. Believe me on that one. Also in 10 years time, they should consider buying B787/A350, it doesn't make sense to order older A330 or B777. B777X is out of the question because most carrier in the US doesn't seem too kin on aircraft with big capacity.

Director of finance is more critical then the CEO, which is a nothing, figurehead  job anyways. Hence my statement  he was , and is  is a liability.    And in the US right now . Any attempt to expand to long haul and lose your focus is doomed to fail.  The only chance is LCC or ULCC.  And with a lot of money in the coffers.

Eastern just needs to offer a better product than the other legacies, and maintain a good, standing reputation, and they will steal passengers.. It's nothing new. Every time United, Delta, or American marginally improve, they steal passengers from the others. The people who founded this new incarnation of Eastern are not going to go LCC, or ULCC ( XD at those who think that).

They would Turn into LCC. Just like how the Big 3 start to adopt LCC service long time ago.

not gonna happen. Eastern might only conquer a small portion of Miami then go back into administration.

well jetBlue and Spirit were very successful offspring airlines... and 15 years later they have 210 and 75 planes respectively compared with AA's 1,500 fleet.. DL's 1,200 and UA's 1,000 fleet airline.
My guess is by 2030, Eastern will have a MIA and MCO focus with 70 planes (737, Mitsubishis and Neos)

They havent done anything stupid yet like PEX or Independence ... so they will likely be well off.

I'm sure it will happen.

Eastern has a partnership with HavanaAir, they are providing 2 daily MIA-HAV-MIA flights and is in the position of having the largest market share for that route,

and will have more destinations with HavanaAir very soon. They also have a strategic partnership with Suriname Airways and more airlines.

Eastern's CEO and management made a very smart decision by choosing to launch as a charter airline and building up form there, rather then making the mistake of rushing strait into to scheduled service like almost all failed start ups.

Eastern is expecting more 737-800s coming this year, it's next plane is a 737-800 N277EA.

If anything you would want Eastern to succeed competition is good!

And Eastern will definitely conquer more then a "small portion" of Miami.

Eastern will become the 4th major us carrier until then they will have a large presence at Miami.

they definetly wont crack the top 6 (AA, DL, UA, WN, B6, AS) for another 15-20 years if everything goes smoothly

It`s going to be hard to get to major destinations if they are trying to avoid American and JetBlue in my opinion.  I sort of hope EA succeeds.

Does anyone know why EA began operations specifically at Miami Int`l?
