If you haven't known already, a group in Miami Florida is working on bringing the Eastern Air Lines name and brand back. The new Eastern Air Lines is working with the FAA to get their commercial operating license in order to begin real commercial schedule service. Their home airport is Miami International airport.
The new Eastern was founded in 2011 and commenced operations as a charter airline on March 2015, and once the FAA has given them their commercial operating certification in early or mid 2016. They can transition to schedule service.
Eastern's starting strategy is to avoid compilation with airlines like American and jetblue as long as possible until they have enough aircraft and a good marketing strategy.
EA received their first aircraft a Boeing 737-800 named "The spirit of Captain Eddie Rickenbacker" on December 19, 2014. They have orders for an additional 10 737-800s and options for 10 737 MAX 8s. They also ordered 20 of Mitsubishi's MRJ90 aircraft with purchasing rights for an additional 20 MRJ90s.
The president and CEO is Edward J. Wegel, if you want a good ceo for a start up airline it would be
Mr. Wegel. Mr. Wegel is a veteran of the airline and aerospace industry with almost 30 years of experience. Mr. Wegel served in the army as an army officer. He was the director of finance for the original Eastern Air Lines in NY and Director of operations for Pan Am from 1985 to 1987. The other members in the board of directors also has background in the airline industry, so I'm confident that the new EA will be a success. If Eastern Air Lines CEO and management markets and runs the airline right, efficiency and makes a good profit they will become a
relevant name in the southern US, Caribbean and Latin America again and if they become really successful
replace US airways as the 4th major legacy US carrier, once the American Airlines US airways merger is complete.
So the big 4 us airlines will be American, United, Delta, and Eastern!
EA hasn't announced any destinations yet, but we can speculate where their first set of destinations will be. EA will be focusing on the Caribbean and Latin America so those destinations will more then likly be there.
They may offer destinations like The Bahamas, San Juan, St Maartin, Georgetown, and Cancun.
If EA expands to long haul routes they may order 787-/8/9, 777-200LR/300ER/LR, 777X, or A330.
In addition to Miami, Eastern could add hubs that once where hubs for the old Eastern
Charlotte Douglas, Kansas City, LaGuardia airport, and San Juan.
It will benefit the airline industry if Eastern Air Lines succeeds, remember compilation IS GOOD!
