Edit: According to Wikipedia, they both were.

I wasn't aware of a merger? I only knew about the AA-US merger. Were the airlines having financial problems?
Edit: According to Wikipedia, they both were.
Sort of no. It was just ideal. Their airlines did not really compete on any major turf. Both had also been looking for mergers in the past (US Airways was courted at one point).
But this hypothetical if they did not merge is dumb. Nothing would change for a few years. The merger was not needed for them to continue going.

"The livery world would be a lot better"
Always liked Continental's livery more then United's livery.

Also, they were both apparently in a bit of a state so that's why I said they're better off merging

Why do US airlines always merge? Can't they just die on their own? Many US airlines would have been shut down had they been anywhere else.
No recent major mergers are from airlines that would have gone bankrupt. Don't confuse bankruptcy protection for bankrupt.
Your comment is pretty dumb Hake. Very few would have been shut down. The merge because there is still money in it.
Take US AA for example.. AA wasn't bankrupt. However, it was having a problem that it couldn't get enough money so it entered protection to prevent certain debts from having to be paid.
You want them to just go bankrupt? That would be awful. Boeing and Airbus would both lose a s*** ton of money. The US airline market would suddenly have a HUGE hole in major markets like Dallas where AA runs 80% of the flights. Prices would sky rocket as there would be dramatically less competition. British Airways and Qantas would suffer a loss in demand in their US flights as no one would be bringing flights to their destinations.
Airlines dying in the US is pretty detrimental to the market for the whole word.
But your statement was also false. Look at British Airways and Iberia. Or KLM and Air France. Or all the airlines that Lufthansa injects with cash.

Yes, I accept your viewpoint. Also, I feel I worded the post wrong. I never meant that I wanted airlines to shut down; damage would be detrimental to some economies. Also, I know the US-AA merger was neccesary. I was just wondering aloud why a lot of airlines have gone bankrupt (Malev, BMIbaby) and some more. After conisderable thought into this I realised that there isn't the appetite for keeping these airlines going. It is probably see as cheaper to take the airline's route's after they're gone instead of buying, streamlining, restructuring and more.No recent major mergers are from airlines that would have gone bankrupt. Don't confuse bankruptcy protection for bankrupt.
