So, anybody who knows even the slightest thing about history are more than aware of Apartheid in South Africa. Consequently, South African airlines were barred from flying to other African nations and (as far as I know) other airlines on the continent were either barred from flying to South Africa, or there was simply not a market. Also, the US prevented South African registered aircraft from flying to it after 1986.

I propose we include political restrictions in game to reflect this, ending around 1990 with the abolition of Apartheid. Could probably work in the same way that Taiwan-China restrictions do (which I think end in 2008 in-game, not 100% on that).

But yeah, thoughts?

Taiwan-China, as far as I know, it does not end in 2008. It never ends. I asked Yuxi to implement the Cross-Strait Links stuff (after 2008 flights between Taiwan and China are allowed), but he didn't do it. But I support this idea. It would make this game a lot more interesting and we would lose a lot of those spammy South African airlines.

I agree.

However countries that appeared on SAA's historic route network should be excluded.

Nexus, I'm a bit confused as to why that link was posted, if it was to show cross-straight flights then nxwm's statement "it never ends" was relevant to political restrictions in AE which are at the moment fixed, so whilst I agree with Steve here as to those political restrictions, I think it's something that will have to wait until AE4 because I'm not aware of any method of having political restrictions automatically expire (I could be wrong though)

The EU is post 2000, and NZAU has some starting date.

Time based restrictions are possible, I'm not sure if expiry is.

if we did implement stuff to do with the arpatheid, wouldn't we also have to implement flight to/from south africa flying around the whole continent?

Agreed. Would make the game much more interesting. But expect less South African airlines then.

Well, well, what about history for all other countries? If there will be a pre-50s world there should be WW2, then there was the Cold War with all kinds of political turmoil and restrictions, like when Reagan banned Aeroflot in the US after KAL 007 incident for a while, countries like Iraq had UN sanctions and no-fly zones for a number of years, some countries' airlines are all banned in the EU because of safety reasons, and there are even more complicated situations like with Iran Air, currently they can't refuel at FRA LHR CDG where they fly to, but they can make a stop to refuel at BUD and LJU on the way back to Iran...

Then, what about internal development of countries themselves? I don't have data, but I guess all of China during the Cultural Revolution didn't have as many passengers than SZX today, before 80s Shenzhen was literally a small fishing village...

If apartheid era restrictions are introduced, a bunch of other political restrictions should also be considered... If not, keeping history only at aircraft development should be enough at the moment.

and btw off-topic, if all other restrictions are current ones, PRC-ROC ban should be lifted, all of major mainland and Taiwanese airlines have dozens of daily cross-strait flights...

All of which I'm more than in favour of implementing...
