Today, 4th March 2010, Monarch Airlines has placed an order for 8 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, worth over $1.2 Billion at list prices.
Deliveries are due to start in June 2011, boosting capacity just before the 2011 Summer Rush, and then replacing its ageing fleet of long haul aircraft before the 2011 Winter Season.
"Operating successfully in the leisure market requires flexible and innovative products. With the 787's longer-range capabilities, we will be opening up new destinations in North America, Caribbean, Asia and Africa," said Sir K.J. Savage, chief executive officer & founder of Monarch Airlines.
Monarch Airlines, headquartered in Luton, is a leading provider in the U.K. of low-cost scheduled flights from bases at London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester and Birmingham airports, as well as a major supplier to the charter and tour operating industry.
Monarch plans on firstly replacing the Boeing 767-300ER it has on lease from Northern Airways and then the range-lacking Airbus A300's that currently serve North American & Caribbean destinations. The remaining 4 787's will then replace some transatlantic 757 services and also fuel expansion of Monarch's Long-Haul network, particularly at Asian leisure destinations. Monarch has yet to name any of its future destinations and is telling journalists to "wait and see."
