I know that terminals exist so that you can continue expanding at an airport without monopolizing it for other airlines but are there any other uses? do passengers prefer to transfer through a separate terminal then through the main airport?

Airport terminals have no purpose apart from allowing more gates than just leasing and reducing costs by 50%

The only benefit for terminals, as far as I am aware, is the extra capacity. There is no real perk to repuation, etc.
