In my opinion Qatar is a really underrated base, many of it routes have good capacity

Major Cities

LHR: 1553 in Y
AUH: 449 in Y
DXB: 616 in Y

Smaller Cities

KBP: 224 in Y
GOT: 112 in Y
KGD: 48 in Y (was expecting like 5 people)

this is true, however it is far from the best non-competitive base in the middle east, with egypt performing spectacularly, along with kuwait, saudi arabia, and others.

The main problem is that Qatar has only one major airport, so you will run out of good routes quickly. I usually recommend the US but China and the EU after 2000 are also viable. Qatar probably would be a good base in the open worlds though.

Considering the central location secondary cities will be great especially when you already have a huge network

Doha - Zanzibar can easily use a A321

Agree with the competition part but I have never seen 3 or more airlines based in Qatar

Unfortunately US competitions are very challenging. You either go big or go extinct there. Even international routes from other countries to US may tend to lose profit easily. China still better and even in my experience it support up to 4 top 10 largest airlines without even reducing prices.

Regarding Qatar itself, i could say it might be similar with Singapore or Hong Kong - you can establish a pretty large airline but possibly not going to make it through the top 5.

Haven't tried basing an airline in Qatar yet but frequently get my margins decimated by somebody who is, when trying to operate into Doha from wherever I am based...

I recommend it for someone who would like to limit himself through the one-hub inherent capacity of this country.
Then one can enjoy the qualitative side of the game better.

At least, that's what I am experiencing.
