Boris Johnson is the new prime minister of the UK. What does this mean? Who cares. I hope it means Boris Island is happening. In celebration, I'm hosting a design challenge to see who can come up with the best design for such an airport.
For those who are out of the loop, Boris Island was a plan put forth by Boris Johnson to create a new airport in the middle of the Thames Estuary outside London in order to relieve congestion at the current London airports. Now that he's prime minister, maybe it'll actually happen once he gets through with this whole Brexit business.
Anyway, the competition. Basically, come up with an airport in the middle of the Thames estuary that can handle the sort of traffic a major hub city can expect. Also consider things like transport from central London including roads and rail, as well as how the airport can better serve London than Heathrow or Gatwick. Once designs have been submitted, we'll put them up for a vote and decide the winners. There is no prize.
Good Luck!
Attached are some design elements to help you out - they're illustrator files that are to-scale for various airport elements at 1pt = 10 feet.
