I have done research for a great place to start but haven't found anywhere. Any ideas of where to start?

My suggestion is to start from a 2nd airport in a big city. Competition wise, Gatwick is better than Heathrow and Orly is better than CDG. Alternatively, find a second biggest city in a country. Abu Dhabi rather than Dubai or Surabaya rather than Jakarta. Anyway, AE is always different every world reset so sometimes you got lucky, sometimes not.

Well, my suggestion is to do some real world research. Find a city that is under-appreciated in the airline industry in real life. Such examples could be Birmingham in the UK, Portland, Oregon in the US, maybe Melbourne, Australia. Those are just only a few suggestions that I have, but it's all up to you on where you could set up shop on starting an airline.

Every country has an under-appreciated airport/destination. I do not know all of them, but if you set up shop at the right place and fly the right planes, your airline is going to thrive live crazy!

Sure, knowing real airports helps, but sometimes in AE it's not that easy, I have serious competition both in Portland and Birmingham in Rd.

It might be OK but had some very tough competition in Turkey from time to time, I wouldn't recommend it so straightforward.

A good beginning strategy is to watch if your choice of HQ already has airlines based there. For example, if you were thinking about starting in USA and you want to be based in south-western US, if you type DFW and you can see that 3 airlines have HQ there, 9 have hubs and 12 have terminals, think about searching for some alternative in Houston or Denver if they're less crowded.

The point being, don't listen to definite answers. :) Adapt to the game world you're trying to play.

Also depends on what you want from the game.  If you're looking to win you need to find a very large airport with few people in it.  If you're more looking to have fun you can start just about anywhere.  I started in DFW in my current sim because there was only one other airline there at the time (granted this was at the very beginning of the game) If you are coming in at the beginning you have more choices but later in the game it gets trickier.

I generally avoid the super popular places to start (ATL, JFK, LAX in usa, LHR, CDG, FRA, in euro and PEK in asia seem to always be packed) Good luck and I hope we've helped!

Either Gatwick or Stansted in London. Or Naples. Generlly small airports. Sharjah is good because of low competition and gate prices but still healthy demand

I enjoy starting out of places like CMH (Columbus) or Raleigh-Durham. Sort of lesser traveled destinations with a high number of pax.

First you should really consider the country and then the airport. If it's a world like R1 (where you can only build terminals in your home country) you should take into consideration how competitive a market might become. So starting an airline in US or China you should expect that in the long run you'll face competition in each and every of your routes. On the other hand, going for a "less popular" country but well located on the World Map could give you low competition in your home market to learn the game and also plenty of juicy international routes :)

For me, in a US lcc, I choose Memphis, Detroit, or St Pete. In the UK I find that Gatwick is more used than Heathrow on domestic routes, I would use LHR for European routes and LGW for everything else.

I've started with Southampton the last few times, in the UK, and then short flights inside UK & Ireland, start short - work your way up

Not exactly, if you start at a small airport, then you will have to fly flights to multiple airports with one aircraft, and the gate costs will kill you

I always start at Indianapolis International or Fort Wayne Int.

Both are less commonly used and they act as gateways to larger airports like Chicago O'Hare, Milwaukee, Buffalo, JFK, and others.

Er, what? The gate costs are lower (per demand) at small airports, aren't they? That is, you'll pay say 4x the price for a gate at LHR than at a smaller airport, but you won't get 4x the demand.

In any case, gate costs are pretty negligible, at least outside the most expensive airports. You're always better to spend $10k extra per month on gates when it means making $100k a _week_ more profit.

I meant if you fly from a small airport to multiple big airports with only one aircraft

We're in agreement then. Flying a couple of shorthaul flights into LHR or somewhere won't pay for the gate cost - and even if it just about does, you can fly those two to somewhere that costs $5k a month instead of $500k and the difference will be extra profit.

A country without an airline, not Europe or USA. Those ones are big words.
