You make money from flying routes and charging money for that, as simple as that.

Configure in-flight services. Charge a lot for everything. Pay less to your staff. Join an alliance (connections etc) Do not advertise your airline. dont open up hubs at the beginning...

Late reply, I know. But this is a basic mistake that I see made pretty often. It's actually very easy to run a profitable airline in this game. So why would you want to ruin your companie's reputation by charging your customers for things that ought to be standard and included in every flight, and screw your employees until no one feels the least bit of loyalty to you anymore, if you don't have to?

I'd say that if you can 'just' keep your income on the positive side of the ballance sheet you need to reevaluate your routes and the type of aircraft you fly before you do anything else. As a start-up company you just can't afford to fly LHR-CDG with a Bonanza and expect to make a profit... even if your staff is all made up of volunteers, and you sell hot dogs at $500.- per serving. And if you fly a 707, you should probably have a different configuration than 189Y. Think a little about what makes actually sense, and you'll quickly get the drift. For instance you'll notice that the huge fuel consumption of the early jets eats away any profit you could otherwise make. Notice how much of the overall cost is due to fuel, and then look at planes that fly fast, far and economically with lots of passengers. With that in mind, you'll find it impossible to fail, unless you take out a bunch of bonds that you can't pay back. Actually the easiest way that I can think of to ruin your company. Good luck now. Hope this helps.
