Why does the A350-900ULR (ultra long range) have a lower range than the base A350-900? Makes absolutely no sense. Did the devs just blindly type in a random number for the range without checking anything?

I assume it’s because in real life it has to be operated with only premium economy and business to use that range. Therefore the actual range should be less than normal with the same number of seats. It’s about fuel (in)efficiency, the ULR carries fuel that gets expended carrying fuel, adding weight and lowering the range with a normal seat configuration. In the low density config, it’s range increases because there is less total weight on the plane.
