There have already been several tutorials that have been made for this game. but they are all old and there are new techniques to play this game. This is a tutorial on how to operate a highly profitable airline (for beginners) to do so, click on the My Airlines tab at the top of the website.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.32.08 AM.png   379.22KB   0 downloads

scroll down to a world of your choice (for beginners i recommend playing on the sandbox worlds)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.33.04 AM.png   390.58KB   0 downloads

I am going to play on Ra today, just go over to airline name, enter a name (i am going to enter US Airways for mine)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.35.32 AM.png   274.57KB   0 downloads

click start airline and it should take you to something like this.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.37.58 AM.png   315.96KB   0 downloads

choose the aircraft of your choice. (i'm going to choose the DC-9-40 for my starting aircraft) and then select your starting airport. Note. you might not want to choose large airports like LAX, LHR, JFK, ORD, ATL, CDG, PEK, HND, ICN, etc. instead choose secondary airports like LGB, LGW, EWR, MDW, CLT, ORY, PKX, NRT, GPO, etc. (but that's my opinion) I am going to choose New Orleans (MSY) as my starting airport. hit the continue button, and it will take you to something like this.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.38.48 AM.png   138.61KB   0 downloads

click on open new route to start some cash flow.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.39.26 AM.png   27.75KB   1 downloads

now choose your first route. (i recommend you avoid big city airport the likes of been mentioned above) I am going to choose MSY - SLC (salt lake city)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.40.06 AM.png   424.58KB   0 downloads

oh no! looks like someone is already flying this route! don't give up. because I'm going to teach you to compete with other airlines (though not recommended)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.40.19 AM.png   379.1KB   0 downloads

first, look at what he's charging. it says he's charging $399 dollars for economy. but look at his IFS (in-flight services) he doesn't have one. so we can work with that. go to add flights.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.40.35 AM.png   211.03KB   0 downloads

now lease a gate.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.41.20 AM.png   270.29KB   0 downloads

it shall take you to this page. click on your aircraft you want to use. select the amount of flights (i'm going to do 10x weekly) lower the ticket price (usually about $10-20) and hit add flights (the one under the ticket price) and boom! you just set up your first route.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.42.00 AM.png   25.62KB   0 downloads

we now have our first route but oh no! we have only about 60% of seats full. let's fix that.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.42.49 AM.png   26.26KB   0 downloads

click on the ticket price, lower the ticket price (let's say $10) and hit save.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.42.58 AM.png   26.23KB   0 downloads

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.43.18 AM.png   23.43KB   0 downloads

now we have 100% load factor. now we need to set up some IFS/Cabin Layouts. click on configure IFS.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.43.50 AM.png   47.04KB   0 downloads

click make new IFS to add.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.45.17 AM.png   148.08KB   0 downloads

(i'm going to show you two ways to set up ifs.)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.50.57 AM.png   146.48KB   0 downloads Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.51.02 AM.png   145.59KB   0 downloads

these are two different IFS. follow along with these to have two different types of services. One side has 1-star snack/meals at max sale price. (known as SCAM IFS) while the other has the 5-star meals/snacks at full price. (while snacks are free.) what about other services like blankets? (known as realistic IFS)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.51.39 AM.png   154.84KB   0 downloads Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.52.13 AM.png   155.28KB   0 downloads

these are the two IFS for your airline the one where all are free (except the newspaper which is $6) is the non-scam IFS, while the max prices is you guessed it SCAM IFS.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.55.26 AM.png   100.75KB   0 downloads Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.52.37 AM.png   99.6KB   0 downloads

look at these. the scam ifs makes us $706 dollars a person in profit!!! really helpful. but it has only one star. while the other one has 4 stars and makes us $120 dollars profit per passenger. (thanks to @ryantovar24091316 for making the Realistic IFS) choose which one you want to use. I'm going to use the scam ifs for now. (but I'm also going to make the Other one too for future uses)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.55.51 AM.png   92.24KB   0 downloads

i'm now going to add them to the flights. select the boxes and choose what IFS you want in that box. i'm going to put SCAM in all of the boxes. hit save. hit it again if it doesn't ask you (do you want to update your IFS on all routes) something like that. hit update and the IFS will be added to our flights. go click the route button. we are now making more money.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.57.29 AM.png   6.7KB   0 downloads

i'm going to skip IFE for now (that can be added in another tutorial) Lets now make a cabin layout for our aircraft. click configure cabin layout

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.57.56 AM.png   51.94KB   0 downloads

select the aircraft in the center box. hit configure. and it will take you to this page.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.58.27 AM.png   43.1KB   0 downloads

add what seats you want on the plane (i'm going to have 12 business class seats, and the rest economy) but you can do whatever you want. (all business class, all economy, etc.) add the IFE (if you don't have it that's ok) then hit save.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.59.07 AM.png   55.18KB   0 downloads

it will take us back here. here it say batch configuration. as you only have the one aircraft hit the GO button on the side. and select yes. you plane now has the new configuration inplace.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 8.59.46 AM.png   242.74KB   0 downloads

our route now needs fixing. go to the route page. click on your route. and in the little box with route information hit the reset button to fix the Business class ticket price.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.00.28 AM.png   244.06KB   0 downloads

tweak with the ticket price until you have 100% load factor. our aircraft right now has 70+ hours. so I'm going to add a new route. since we are already on the route page. don't click on open new route. instead click the box at the top that has the airports on the right hand side. enter a new destination (i'm going to do Tampa)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.01.01 AM.png   13.8KB   0 downloads

look at this. no red. that means there is no competition on this route. you have the whole route to yourself (for now at least)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.01.52 AM.png   151.31KB   0 downloads

do the same thing. least the gate, select the aircraft but instead of lowering the ticket price. leave it at the default. (maybe even raise it a couple bucks to get extra cash. add flights and now you have two routes.

we are now going to help you save money. click on the airline options button at the top. click on human resources, and look at your employees.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.09.43 AM.png   190.06KB   0 downloads

right now we are paying over 800k a month. click on pay, and lower all of them to 7 dollars. (can't do any lower because $7 is the minimum wage in america and it's not any different because the server is in america) anyway hit save.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.09.58 AM.png   203.63KB   0 downloads

now we way less. next, click on the branding button. do what you want with that! add an IATA code, a slogan, logo, livery, etc. I'm going to have US as my 2-digit code (if it is not available, choose another one until it is available) my slogan is do you like cheap? or cheaper! and I am going to put the US airways logo on the game. just hit choose file, upload a file from your computer and hit upload. (I got this logo online) but you can make your own. we are now going to get more aircraft. click on order new aircraft button.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.14.02 AM.png   189.24KB   0 downloads

there is a whole list of aircraft you can buy or lease (i recommend lease for right now until you have more cash) i'm going to lease more DC-9-40s (choose the aircraft you started with and you'll do fine)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.14.28 AM.png   107.51KB   0 downloads

there are several different engine options to choose from (choose the one with the lowest fuel flow (but as this one has better range, for just a bit more fuel i'm going to choose this one.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.16.09 AM.png   634.61KB   0 downloads

choose how many you want to lease. I am going to lease 2. (because I can't afford anymore) hit confirm leases and they will arrive on the dates chosen on the page.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.16.51 AM.png   456.21KB   0 downloads

and there you have it. (make sure to check back later to add more routes with the aircraft.)

Just one more thing:

this is a different airline, but I'm going to show you how to use the used aircraft market. (for sandbox worlds i recommend buying from them as well) click on used aircraft market.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.18.16 AM.png   427.19KB   0 downloads

choose what aircraft is available by the catalog above. (i'm going to choose the A320-200)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.18.31 AM.png   441.56KB   0 downloads

select which aircraft you want and click lease (unless you want to buy)

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.18.49 AM.png   285.33KB   0 downloads

choose how long you want to lease the aircraft for. (i'm going to choose 10 years) hit lease. and it will take you to the aircraft page. this is one of my older aircraft.

Attached File  Screenshot 2021-10-19 9.19.42 AM.png   283.06KB   0 downloads

you can change the seat configuration there or click the configure cabin layout button to batch configure.

AND THAT IS HOW YOU MAKE A HIGHLY PROFITABLE AIRLINE!!!

Don't forget that each aircraft family has its own base maintenance cost, meaning that it is more economical to operate 5x A320-200, 5x A321-200, and 5x A319-100 v.s. 3x B737-500, 3x A320-200, and 3x B757-200.

It's really useful for starting up, but remember that you can get more aircraft if you take aircraft from multiple families.

in that if you are confident in being able to grow quickly, then buying multiple families is good for you.

If you are less confident, stay to a single family.

(I always start my airline exclusively flying the B757-200 until I get a daily operating revenue of around ~50M/day to simplify costs)

The route pricing structure is critical to understand as well. It's an odd system in which price increases with distance then drops after 99, 199, 299, 399, 1499, 2999, 5999, and 8999 miles.

How does this play out?

Well the default price for flying 299 and 630 miles is about the same.

Factor in that IFS is completely unrelated to distance (i.e. pax buy same # of meals on a 2mi flight as on a 10,000mi flight) and you should be able to see the virtue of flying shorter routes. There's little excuse for an intelligent person to fly farther than 1499 miles early in any world, if she's trying to maximize profit.

That's why the best place to start is easily Europe. You have so much demand even within 500 mile routes, and with OpenSkies you can fly many more routes. I'd avoid UK and Germany for the most part though, that's where most of the competition is.

I'm currently playing an airline in Greece and there's a bunch of demand just in the country

Greece is very very good for regional routes; inter-island flights get loads of demand.
