South African Airlines - Suid Afrikaanse

Founded in 1947, South African Airlines (SAA) started with 6 DC-3 aircraft, loaned from Great Britain.

They entered the Jet Age in 1958, with the 707-120.  Along with this aircraft came a new livery, ditching the bright, tribal colours of the DC-3

for a more subdued, high-class look.

First Class meals, wine, and champagne place this far above it's regional competition.

These aircraft, a VC10, a 707-420, and a Lockheed Super Constellation all wear the 1958 "Jet Age" livery.

MAINE NEW ENGLAND AIRLINES INC. | Portland, ME, USA

Maine New England Air (MNEA) founded in 1940 with a handful of DC-3s and Grumman G21s flying to the Cape and Coast of Maine from Boston and Portland respectively. As the airline grew it began interstate and international flying with Convair CV-440s in 1953. MNEA prides itself on its wide range of destinations throughout New England and its high frequency service between Portland-Boston-New York City. MNEA's logo features the white pine which is common throughout New England and 6 Stars, one for each New England State; Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. The colors also come from the flag of New England and the ocean which is close to the heart for many New Englanders. With the jet age fast approach Maine New England Air has its sights set on growing to service the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.

Arabica Airways

Arabica Airways began operating in 1940 from Riyadh. The HZ-ARA arrived during the expansion of Arabica to other airports in Saudi Arabia to help the expansion of the airline, being one of the most recognized aircraft of all for being the first aircraft in the fleet that didnt operate from Riyadh, but operated from Jeddah. 25 years after his first flight for the airline, it was stored and placed as a monument at the entrance to Jeddah airport.Douglas_DC-7C_ARA.png

I want to thank everybody for their patience with the results of this challenge, it's been a hectic few days! Anyways, here are the results! I have many good things to say about the outcome of this challenge, as with the first one. As before, congratulations to our top 5 contenders! Some really, really nice pieces were submitted for this, that I would love to see more of in the gallery for sure! It took me quite some time to make final decisions, and everybody should be very proud of their work. Also as before, don't think of a lower score as a mark of your capabilities, but as motivation for the next challenge to work differently to achieve a better result! I think just about everybody that submitted one for this that competed in the last one did much, much better.

Brands were judged on the basis of Originality, Cohesiveness, and Appeal, on a scale of 1 to 10, with 30 points being awarded total. I have outlined what I was looking for in each of those categories below. Brands that received the same points score were placed in order based upon what I thought the brand deserved, based on my normal judging characteristics for someone else's work.

Originality - When looking at your submission for originality, I'm looking to see if I can see aspect of real-life brands in them, distinguishing between inspirational aspects, and just taking something from a real life brand. Lower scores in originality either had many similarities to a real life airline, another submission, or both.

Cohesiveness - This measure is probably the most subjective. When looking at a submission for cohesiveness, I'm looking for things such as how well the colors work together, logo fits with the type of airline, and the effectiveness of the brand.

Appeal - Appeal is simply how much I like the design. If I think it looks great, then more points were awarded than if I don't.

I am available for questions about the judging process, and feedback if you would like it. Please check out edge's "Less than 50 seats" that is available to compete in now! http://www.airline-e...sign-challenge/
